I. The Trilogy: Three Games, Three Morals
1. Portes (Doors)
- The Vibe: Closely resembles Western backgammon.
- The Goal: Move your checkers to your home board and "bear them off".
- The Moral (Risk & Conflict): This is the only version where you can "hit" an opponent’s single piece (a "blot") and send it to the bar (the middle ridge).
- Pro-Tip: Unlike Western rules, the winner of the opening roll re-rolls for their first turn.
2. Plakoto (Covering)
- The Vibe: A game of "Jail."
- The Goal: Trap the opponent’s pieces.
- The Moral (Patience & Defense): Instead of hitting a piece off the board, you land on it and "pin" it; that piece cannot move until you release it.
- The "Mother" Rule: Your last piece on the starting point is the "Mother" (Mana). If your opponent pins your Mother before she leaves the start, the game is lost.
3. Fevga (Running)
- The Vibe: A strategic race where hitting and pinning are strictly forbidden.
- The Goal: Outmaneuver and block.
- The Moral (Efficiency & Flow): A single piece "makes the point," effectively blocking it.
- The "Prime" Rule: You may build a "prime" (6 points in a row), but you cannot completely block an opponent; you must always leave them a "door" to pass through.
II. The Unwritten Laws of the Table
Your skill with the dice is secondary to your "Table Moral."
- The Speed Rule: Tavli is fast. Do not wait for your opponent to pick up the dice; retrieve them as they finish their move.
- Dice Etiquette: Dice must hit the board and bounce. If a die lands tilted ("cocked") or on a checker, both must be re-rolled.
- The Winner's Right: The winner of the previous game always rolls first in the next.
- The Frappé Anchor: A game is incomplete without coffee; sip slowly, but play quickly.
III. Sentinel’s Vocabulary
Sound like a local with these essential terms:
- Zaria: The roll of the dice.
- Assakia / Dyares / Triares / Ntortia / Pentares / Exares: Terms for rolling 1s through 6s.
- Asso-Dyo: A 1 and 2 roll (the most loved/hated roll depending on context).
- Manna: The mother piece in Plakoto.
- Pame!: "Let's go!" (Shouted after a lucky double).
IV. Scoring
- 1 Point: A "simple" win (you finish while the opponent has started bearing off).
- 2 Points: A "Diplon" (Double). You finish before the opponent has removed a single piece.
- Note: As of 2026, there is no "triple" (backgammon) win in Naxian Tavli.
The Sentinel’s Insider Tip: Visit Kafeneio Galani in the Old Market or a village cafe in Apeiranthos. Observe for 15 minutes before asking to play. Once you have "lurked" enough, a local may ask: "Paizoume?" (Shall we play?). If you win, honor the ritual by buying them the next round of Raki.
